Tell me about it

I have an idea. How would you like to tell me what green-living-things you want to learn more about? And I'll go away and research it for you, and then summarise it all concisely right here. Is that good?

I'm cautious of steaming ahead with ideas and blabbering about things I'm excited about, without stopping sometimes, and looking up, and asking if you're excited about the same things.

So, go... Tell me what you want to know. I'm listening...

  3. Hi! I really enjoy your blog too. (Found it through G magazine).

I would like to know whether bamboo toothbrushes are better than plastic ones, even if you don't have any compost to put it in when you are done with it. Did that make sense?

    1. Absolutely! I'll investigate that one... from what I know they do work out better in the end because they compost, even if you send them to landfill. You can also reuse the wood by cutting the brush off... use them as cute little plant labels, for instance.

  4. Hi Maria,
I really love this blog! I'm so happy I randomly found the image of your apple cider vinegar in a google search and ended up reading a ton of your posts. I'm even on day 9 of no sugar! Anyway, I was wondering about toothpaste too - a friend of mine uses dehydrated toothpaste. Is that better, do you know?
Also, I really loved all of your info about detoxing your beauty routine. I can't wait to try your products for moisterizer and sunscreen. I have been going through a long process of quitting make-up and hair products, but there's a big chunk of feminist motivation in there as well as a desire to do well by our planet. Did you have any feminist reasons for quitting these products? Did you mean it in that sense when you said you felt "completely liberated" after you stopped wearing makeup?
Sorry for all the questions - I'm just so excited to have found this blog!

    1. Thanks S, so glad you're enjoying it. And congrats for going sugar-free! You won't regret it :)

I'll be sure to post more on natural beauty and personal care, but to answer your question briefly, yes, there definitely was an element of feminism in my choice to abandon all make up. I'm not a fierce feminist by any stretch of the imagination, but part of me was feeling very irked that as women, we subject ourselves to ridiculous beauty regimes and cover ourselves in all manner of toxic chemicals just to look pretty. Somehow, that's become a social standard. But it doesn't make any sense.

So yes, it is what I meant when I said it's made me feel completely liberated.

That and by not wearing any make up, I've got nothing to hide behind. I'm facing the world with nothing but the truth. Take me or leave me. And that does feel like a big relief.

  5. I forgot one thing - real books or an ereader? I know in theory the second is "better" for lack of paper use, but I'm still not convinced it's better than the selfish desire I have to hold a physical book in my hands. I'd love your thoughts - if your writing can help me quit sugar, it can probably do just about anything!

    1. I'm totally with you on this one. No e-reader can match the experience of curling up with a physical book, feeling the roughness of the paper at your fingertips, smelling that woody, fibrous aroma. Creasing the pages, marking sentences that have shot right through you... I don't think books will ever be phased out, I really don't.

I'll investigate this more, but from what I know, ending up with a whole lot of e-waste is a lot more toxic than chopping down fsc plantation trees to produce real books.
